I have been the counselor of Tom Lea Elementary for the past seven years. I have thirteen years of experience in the field of education. My college education consists of a Master’s in Education specializing in Counseling from Sul Ross State University (SRSU) and a Bachelor’s of Interdisciplinary Studies in Elementary Education with a specialization in Life/Earth Science from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
Information on Counseling Services
The counselor services all students on a regular basis through guidance lessons using the "Core Essentials" character education program. Students may be referred by the teacher or parent for services related to academic, emotional, personal/social, or behavioral problems. Children may be serviced individually or in a small group.
The students learn about various character traits and academic skills. Every class is serviced by the counselor through Guidance Lessons which are conducted on a three week rotation. This is a great way to establish rapport with each and every child as well as teach them life skills.
Our students have also been learning behaviors and strategies for staying safe at home, at school, and in the community through a program offered by the Mental Health America of Greater Dallas Entitled WHO (We Help Ourselves). WHO is a project to help fight the victimization of children. It teaches them the basic rules for personal safety, allows them to learn what to do when faced with a dangerous situation, and gives information on where and who to go to for help. The program consists of an initial visual presentation with discussion facilitated by our Counselor, a trained presenter, followed by supplementary activities. This information is delivered and handled in a caring and sensitive way.
Group Counseling Support Services
These services are conducted in an effort to help students achieve success in the classroom. All counseling services are designed to address the academic, emotional, personal/social, or behavioral needs of the students. Any information discussed in group counseling is kept confidential.
HURA- Herd, Understood, Recognized and Acknowledged
The purpose of this service is intended to bring military students together while participating in activities. These activities are designed to help children build up their resilience, improve their socialization skills, coping skills and problem solving skills.
Students will meet with the counselor and/or military liaison in a group setting approximately two-four times a month depending on the needs of the student. These services will take place during the school day in an effort to avoid disruption of instructional time. If you would like to have your child participate in this service please fill out a permission form in the front office as soon as possible. All permission slips need to be returned to Mrs. Vallez in the front office. If you have any questions feel free to contact the Military Liaison Mrs. Vallez or Counselor Mrs. Millan at 774-7725.
We look forward to helping you and your child in making the rest of the school year as successful as possible.
